Poplar Slice with Charred Center
This is one of my favorites. You never know what you will find when you start working with a piece of wood and this one definitely had a story to tell. As I began to clean it up and stabilize it, I realized that the center had been burned and was charred…not the outside at all, just the inside and the black extends into some of the heartwood of the tree. This tree had to have been struck by lightning. Wow. There is really no other explanation. I decided not to hide the char, but to enhance it. I poured a thin base layer of black epoxy, added a few river rocks and filled the rest of the void with clear epoxy so that this majestic tree and it’s strength could still be viewed for years to come. I want someone to love this table as much as I do. 24.25” tall x 19” diameter on a gold metal base.
